Upper Elementary Sunday Jan 22: The Wise Shun Evil (Fear of the Lord)

Key Verse:

‘The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom,
and to shun evil is understanding.’”
Job 28:28b NIV

Key Themes:

  • The wise man shuns evil; fools are hotheaded and reckless.
  • A wise person turns from evil immediately.
  • The wise man more than shuns evil; he hates evil.

Additional Texts:

Prov 14:16
Gen 39:1-20
Prov 8:13
John 2:13-17
Psalm 141:1
Psalm 119:136
Psalm 119:127-128

Discussion Questions:

1. What does it mean to be hotheaded?

2. Why don’t fools turn from evil?

3. What are some evils we should hate? How do we not only turn away from these evils, but stand against them?

Application Points:

1. Talk with your child about the influences of this world which are trying to capture the children of God. Give practical illustrations of this. Talk about what makes it difficult to “shun evil” (e.g. peer pressure, our own fleshly desires, ignorance, etc.)

2. Share with your child a way in which you shun evil and your strategy for turning away from evil. Then ask your child about some way in which he shuns evil.

3. Note with your family if there are any areas in which your family members are lax in turning from evil immediately. Discuss why this is so and what you will do about it. Pray for one another.
